Research Assistant Overview

Product Background and Terminology

Research Assistant is an AI tool in OneSearch, which is referred to as Primo by the vendor, Ex Libris. The parent company is Clarivate. The CDI is the Central Discovery Index, a large index of articles and other electronic content in academic and research databases. The CDI is similar to WorldCat but only includes e-content and is focused on finding articles.

While Krueger patrons access the CDI via OneSearch, not all profiles in OneSearch include a CDI search. The Research Assistant is separate from our local holdings. However, items cited in Research Assistant can be requested via Resource Sharing.

AI Technology

Research Assistant uses GPT‑4o‑mini, though the provider may change. There are two separate AI functions.

  1.  Generative AI summary: A brief summary using five resources is created based on abstracts and descriptions from select vendors in the CDI.
  2. AI Boolean Search: A plain-language query is converted into a Boolean search for OneSearch.
