Intersex: an umbrella term used to describe people who have chromosomes, hormonal profiles, or genitals that do not typically fit into binary medical and social constructions fo male and female. Biological sex, like gender, is not binary. Between 0.05% and 1.7% of people are born with intersex traits, although not everyone with intersex traits identities as intersex (Free & Equal, 2015).
